Why Don’t We Perform Animal Sacrifices Today? Will We Again?

For Christians, and probably many other religions, Facebook is a place to engage with people who believe as you do and to engage with those who don’t. Hopefully, we can still respond in love even to those who disagree with our theology. For how we respond to others, demonstrates how mature we are in the love of Yeshua. Topics of politics and religion can easily stir others to anger; hopefully, if anger manifests, it will be a righteous anger, like Jesus demonstrated when the so-called worshipers were making the temple into a social and profitable experience- In doing so, they made the temple and themselves unclean. Keep this in mind as we will discuss this concept more at a later time.

Recently, I wrote a lengthy response to a Facebook friend’s opinion about God’s law being irrelevant and done away with. I pray I effectively explained some critical truths overlooked by many and the reader(s) dug into Scripture for themselves while diligently seeking Abba (Father God) on the matter. To read that article stemmed from a Facebook post, click here. In the meantime, a different Facebook friend shared my article with a comment asking a valid question. As for me, I love digging into the word of God and seeking Abba’s heart on these concerns, so I welcome the questions for all of it makes each of us wiser and stronger in our faith. Below is the Facebook friend’s comment in blue italics and my response in bold red letters.

Facebook Friend’s Question/Comment:

“To those that believes this all I can say is where is your alter and your animals that you are sacrificing for your sin? Cuz the Torah is full of very specific directions for sacrificing animals in very specific ways for very specific sins. So if God has not annulled any of his word, if nothing has changed, then you better be sacrificing animals on an altar somewhere or your sins are not covered.
But my sins, on the other hand, are covered by the death, burial, resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus. He changed everything. So I no longer have to sacrifice animals on an altar, which the Torah is full of instructions for, because God instituted a new covenant, New Testament and as his word says in the New Testament if the Old Testament was sufficient there would have been no need for a new testament, New Covenant. Heb.8:8-13, 9:15,12:24″

My Response:

Let’s tackle the first paragraph for that is the most straightforward of the two.

https___www.ou.org_jewish_action_files_mizbeach2According to Torah (God’s law/First 5 Books of the Bible), the animal sacrifices, as well as all the other sacrifices not discussed above, including the various sacrifices performed at Passover of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot), for example, can only be done:

#1 in the place where Yahweh (God) chooses, namely in the tabernacle/temple {in Jerusalem} (see Exodus 20:24; Leviticus 17:3-6; Deuteronomy 12:13-14, 16:5-6). The tabernacle/temple, according the specifications outlined in Torah (starting in Exodus 25+), no longer exists. The original tabernacle was constructed by the Israelites while wandering the wilderness in Moses’ day followed by Solomon’s temple, a brick and mortar building, which was destroyed by the Babylonian’s in 587 BC, as predicted by the prophet Jeremiah as judgment by God for not adhering to God’s Torah. Later, Ezra and Nehemiah helped reconstruct the temple after the 70 year captivity of the Jews relinquished. That temple was destroyed in 70 AD by the Roman Empire, as predicted by Jesus/Yeshua. The various ceremonial sacrifices can only be offered in the prescribed temple as outlined within the Torah. So since none exists since 70 AD, the sacrifices ceased at that time, just as they did when the Jewish people were in Babylonian captivity (no temple).

#2 The sacrifices can only be orchestrated and performed by Levite priests, who all stem from Moses’ brother, Aaron. See Exodus 28-29.

Due to the fact that there is no physical temple in Jerusalem, per the detailed outline of Torah, nor active Levitical priests able to perform their role because of not having a temple, animals sacrifices cannot legally manifest. (Note: The Temple Institute has created all the artifacts for the third temple and they/Jewish people today have been rehearsing such events anticipating a third temple to be built in the near future).

In summary, the various ceremonial sacrifices performed daily and during the Feast of Yahweh can only be performed in a temple as outlined in Scripture located in Jerusalem where the Levite priest can resume their appointed role. Until a temple is reconstructed, presumably on temple-mount, where Solomon’s temple and the temple of Nehemiah’s day is believed to have resided, no ceremonial sacrifices can manifest.
